Quintessentially Foundation & The Firefly Project

About The Cause

Quintessentially Foundation was created in 2008 to address some of Britain’s most acute social problems, especially those right on our doorstep.

Our approach has always been to galvanise our network of donors, friends and partners, and inspire them to make a difference. We have put our shoulders to the wheel, serving the communities we work with, to the best of our ability.

In 2022, we launched The Firefly Project, a new grassroots initiative focused on children and young people living in poverty. The programme provides funding, raises awareness and facilitates partnerships to ‘turbo charge’ these smaller charities and help them reach more people.

London is a city of opportunity and possibility, but not for everyone. Over 700,000, or 40% of the capital’s children, are living in poverty, the highest rate of child poverty anywhere in England. UK wide, the figure stands at 34%. Every day, from their early years through to young adulthood, children and young people face challenges which stop them reaching their potential.

Whilst the challenges facing London’s children and young people are formidable and complex, there are grassroots organisations that offer proven solutions, drawing on their deep understanding of their community’s needs.

Yet small charities are often overlooked and hampered by a lack of funding, resources or access to opportunities to take their proven models and expand. Astonishingly fewer than 5% of charities receive 85% of total charitable income.

We want to change this.

The Firefly Project supports five outstanding charities:

The Kids Network

Supports children at a crucial time in their lives as they transition from primary into secondary school. They do this by providing them with a volunteer mentor from their London community.

Little Village

Redistributes clothes, toys and equipment for babies and children up to the age of five.

20/20 Change

Is a youth empowerment organisation that works with out-of-work young Black people, many of them graduates who are the first in their families to go to university.

Team Up

Uses tuition, delivered by inspirational role models, to enable pupils from low-income backgrounds to meaningfully increase their academic attainment.

Doorstep Library

is a community-focused charity dedicated to bringing the gift of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children across London who need its support.

‘The Quintessentially Foundation support has enabled us at The Kids Network to provide 600 children living in hardship with a volunteer mentor at a critical stage in their lives. Working with QF has unlocked collaboration and connection to help children live the lives they deserve.’
